Designed: 1971
Completed: 1972
Raleigh Woods Apartment is a 17 unit complex on almost one acre of land. Each
unit is over 1,500 square feet with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. An
important consideration was to respond to privacy in the separation of public
and private spaces. The solution was to integrate the parking facilities,
walkway and courtyards in such a way that a continuous structure is formed
terracing up the site. From the covered parking area one enters the public
walkway, which acts as a spine connecting the semi-private entry courtyards.
The
exterior is knitted together in an interesting play of color and wood textures.
White plywood, blue cedar fascia and dark stained cedar siding are meticulously
integrated into a striking building facade. The building and trees are brought
together as continuos play of light and shadow on the small parcel of land.
The result is a satisfying living environment for the project's tenants and
a building design that is a unique experience for apartment living.
