BUTTERFLY HOUSE Ito, Japan - Designed 2010
This retreat was envisioned as a personal oasis floating above the city of Ito, Japan. The house includes two large bathrooms downstairs each complete with sauna, hot tub, cold soaking tubs, and a large soaking tub on the open deck upstairs. In this way the house becomes its very own hot springs for the owner’s family. These soaking areas are powered by hydrothermal energy piped from the volcanic mountains above the city. The large folded roof which hovers over the open floor plan gives the house its namesake and helps make this residence a calming retreat near the Japanese coast.
